“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” – 1 John 3:17
“You shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother.” - Deut 15:17
As we sit back in material comfort, the Spirit reminds us that all we have – home, car, televisions, phones – come from God. How we steward the material wealth the Lord has entrusted to us is a test of our faith. One biblical truth is that when we give, we are expressing the love of God in us.
After all “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son…” If God shows his love for us by making the ultimate gift, how can we imitate Him? One way is to give what we have, even what we hold dear, what we treasure, and give it away. When we give, we demonstrate our love of God by loving our neighbor.
Scripture is clear, in both the Old and the New Testaments, that a spirit of generosity is one sign of faith and trust in the Lord. When we give to the work of the Lord through church, charity or ministry, we are acting out of love.
APPLICATION FOR TODAY:
- How are we stewarding what the Lord has entrusted to us?
- What priority does God have when we make out our gift lists?
- How do we reflect our faith by caring for the widows, the poor and the orphan—all those children of God who have less than us?
- How can we share the spirit of generosity with our families and make giving a part of our family legacy of faith?
