Giving Blesses: A Biblical Principle

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35

Often when we consider the fruits of our giving we focus on the immediate impact of the dollars. For example, when we give to a ministry providing Bibles to the unchurched peoples of Scotland, we conclude the impact of our gift was on those individual Scots who actually received the Bibles. But the impact of our giving extends far beyond what the money we send can buy or provide. When Jesus declared that it was more blessed to give than to receive he was alluding to a wider blessing.

  • Giving blesses individuals, including those we know and some we can’t even see. Our giving may even bless individuals and generations yet unborn.
  • When we give, our giving also blesses families. When families come together to discuss giving, everyone is blessed and the family draws closer together in Christ.
  • When we give, our giving blesses the community. That community may be our neighborhood, our local church, the ministries we support, and the people in each.
  • Ultimately, our giving is a blessing to the building of Christ’s Kingdom! Now that’s quite a broad blessing.
