Studies show that in one generation, the number of occasional Bible readers fell by twenty percent—the equivalent of about 700 people per day. If this trend continues, by 2040 two-thirds of Americans will have no meaningful connection with the Bible.
The Institute for Bible Reading was formed to address this growing problem by challenging the old paradigms of what it means to read the Bible well and by giving people the resources they need to restore their relationship with God's Word.
The Institute for Bible Reading believes that the negative Bible trend can be reversed. They are reintroducing people to the Bible as a whole story, not as segmented text.
So far, their efforts have helped over 6,000,000 people experience the Bible in fresh new ways through programs like The Story and Community Bible Experience.
- The Story
The Story is an abridged, chronological Bible that reads like a novel. There are no verse references, and Scripture segments are seamlessly woven together with transition text into a single grand narrative. For those intimidated or overwhelmed by the unabridged Bible, The Story helps people understand God’s Word more fully and engage with it more easily.
- Community Bible Experience
The Community Bible Experience gathers groups together to read the Bible. There are no workbooks to complete or essay questions to answer. The format is more like a book club than a Bible study. As a result, groups gather once a week simply to discuss, ponder, and reflect together.
The Reason Why
As Philip Yancey, author and member of the board of advisors for the Institute for Bible Reading, exclaims,
"No book has had a greater impact on history. No book has sold more copies—or sat unread on more shelves. The Institute is committed to getting the Bible read, and understood, a worthy goal that just might start the spiritual renewal this world needs."
