Ontario WaterStone Giving Academy

Do you remember when the iPhone first came out? Remember the lines people stood in and waited in to get their hands on one of these groundbreaking pieces of technology? Well, I was one of those crazy people who waited for hours. It seemed like something was special about this device.

Fast forward 10 years and the cell phone market is dominated by “smart phones”; what was at first a novelty has become the norm and way of life.

What I saw in the cell phone market with the iPhone, I now see in the world of giving. Although it’s not a new concept, the idea of giving assets instead of cash or by check is for many families a revolutionary way to give.

WaterStone helps givers make smart choices about how they give so their favorite churches, ministries and nonprofits can receive more resources to further their causes. In turn, Uncle Sam receives fewer dollars (and it’s legal)!

We teach these concepts to church, nonprofit and ministry leaders, Kingdom-minded givers, and advisors (financial advisors, estate planning attorneys, CPAs) at a multi-day learning experience we call the WaterStone Giving Academy.

There is something special about gathering a group of like-minded individuals to solve the question of how to get more resources to the Kingdom to accomplish Kingdom work, so WaterStone believes Giving Academies are one of the most important things that we do.

On February 7-8, 2017, we were blessed to have representatives from a range of kingdom organizations (a deaf ministry in Guatemala, churches, world missions and even a college golf fellowship) out to our WaterStone Giving Academy in Ontario, California.

For me the most impactful moments at these gatherings is seeing how the story of intentional giving “clicks” in people’s minds. We relay kingdom stories involving giving strategies that multiply the impact of giving, minimize taxes and heighten the joy of generosity. Givers learn how to strengthen family legacies of giving and strategies to steward resources more intentionally.

The “light bulb” goes off in a Giving Academy Attendee’s mind when they see the power of asset-based giving. It’s like the moment you realize the smart phone in your hand changes the way you interact with technology – there’s a better way of doing things.
